Detektiv Murdoch vyšetřuje smrt Sáry Bosenové, která se zabila skokem z okna svého nemocničního pokoje. Takový čin u ní nikdo nepředpokládal. U dr. Julie Ogdenové si léčila fóbii – strach z pavouků a jeho překonávání. Směr vyšetřování tak podstatně ovlivní, když Murdoch v pokoji Sáry naleze mrtvého pavouka. Dr. Charles Linden se domnívá, že zvolená terapie byla u pacientky zbytečná a neúčinná. V průběhu dalšího pátrání dochází Murdoch k závěru, že v nemocnici se někdo snaží zabíjet pacienty.
