Detektiv Murdoch vyšetřuje smrt vynálezce, jenž byl nalezen v hotelovém pokoji v nehybné poloze na zvláštní židli, kterou vymyslel. Při průchodu mírného elektrického proudu její konstrukcí pak měla sloužit jako převratně osvěžující a omlazující prostředek. Starosta hovoří s inspektorem Brackenreidem o ambiciózních plánech Julie v nadcházejících volbách, v nichž hodlá vystupovat jako nezávislá kandidátka.
