Detektiv Murdoch a konstábl Crabtree řeší případ muže nalezeného v řece. Tam jej objevil Inspektor Brackenreid, když rybařil se svými syny. Příčinou smrti neznámého rozhodně nebylo utopení, ale kovová tyč ve tvaru šípu, která zasáhla jeho čelo. Účetní stvrzenka v kapse oběti pak nasměruje další vyšetřování policistů do města Markham. Tam je mrtvý identifikován jako muž, jenž tu před časem hledal mýtický chrám Taj Mahal. Je údajně ukrytý v lese, někde na západ od města a střežen trollem. Vše je hodně podivné a podezřelé.
