Detektiv Murdoch v Torontu vyšetřuje smrt vynálezce Karla Schreyera, který byl zabit při zahájení výstavy. Muž byl velmi neoblíben, kolegové vynálezci jej obviňují z krádeže nápadů, jež využíval pro vlastní potřebu. Podivné je, že právě Schreyer se obrátil s prosbou o pomoc na Murdocha, po údajném obdržení výhružného dopisu.
