Detektiv William Murdoch vyšetřuje vraždu profesora Samuela Bennetta, který byl zastřelen do hlavy při pohledu do dalekohledu, v jeho univerzitním bytě. Okolnosti smrti jsou dost podivné. Podezřelým se stává další člen fakulty, profesor fyziky Albert Godfrey, jenž měl příliš často hádky se zemřelým a mohl mít důvod k vraždě. Konstábl Crabtree uvede v novinách inzerát, v němž se pokouší nalézt svoji biologickou matku. K jeho překvapení, se během několika hodin, přihlásí hned dvě ženy, žijící ve městě.
