Mladý iluzionista Harry Houdini v Torontu úspěšně předvede svůj trik zmizení, ve stejné době, kdy v blízké bance dojde k loupeži a strážce Joe Decker je zabit. Doktorka Ogdenová, několik policistů, včetně detektiva Murdocha a inspektora Brackenreida, v té době seděli mezi zvědavými diváky. Není divu, že Houdini je prvním podezřelým a rázem se ocitne pod policejní kontrolou. A inspektor Brackenreid je dokonce přesvědčen, že vraha již zná. Detektiv Murdoch ale nedokáže zcela ukrýt své pochybnosti nad tak jednoduchým a rychlým řešením.
