Kreslený seriál zachycuje námořnická a někdy nesmyslná dobrodružství SpongeBoba, nevyléčitelně optimistické, bezstarostné a mluvící mořské houby a jejích přátel, kteří žijí na dně oceánu. Několik sáhů pod korálovým ostrovem Bikini, v podmořském městě Zátiší Bikin, bydlí SpongeBob ve dvoupatrovém ananasu. Místo, aby každodenní problémy řešil logicky, SpongeBob přistupuje k životu velmi svérázným a neobvyklým způsobem. Ať už hledá nejlepší špachtli, která by zdokonalila jeho techniku obracení burgerů v restauraci u pana Krabse, nebo se jen poflakuje se svým nejlepším kamarádem Patrickem (laskavou hvězdicí), jeho dobré úmysly a překypující nadšení vždycky způsobí v podmořském světě pěkné pozdvižení.
