Terror over the Pacific
Z letiště v Honolulu 24. února 1989 před druhou hodinou v noci odstartoval let United Airlines 811. Řídil kapitán David Cronin, byl to jeho předposlední let před odchodem do penze. Také druhý pilot Al Slater nasbíral za pětadvacet let u aerolinií řadu zkušeností. V kokpitu byl ještě třetí pilot, palubní inženýr Randal Thomas. Na palubě bylo 337 pasažérů. Stuart McClure, jeho matka a mladší bratr cestovali do Austrálie k příbuzným. Další zastávkou letu 811 byl Auckland na Novém Zélandu, odkud měl pokračovat do australského Sydney. Boeing 747 je širokotrupý dálkový letoun poháněný čtyřmi turbodmychadlovými motory. Je to jedno z nejúžasnějších letadel, která tu kdy byla. Při maximální vzletové hmotnosti 440 tun s přehledem uletí dvanáct tisíc kilometrů. A s maximální cestovní rychlostí Mach 0,85, což je přes devět set kilometrů za hodinu, je rychlejší než většina novějších strojů. Před nimi byla bouřka, na palubě bylo šestnáct členů palubního personálu. Jedním z nich byl Leonard Jenkins, který byl mimo službu. Od vzletu uplynulo devět minut a bouřku měli téměř za sebou. Pravý vnitřní motor přestal fungovat, kapitán Cronin potřeboval naléhavě zjistit, jaký je rozsah škod. To ovšem nebylo možné, z kabiny unikal vzduch. (Česká televize)
